Semiparametric modelling of spatial binary observations

چکیده

In the past decade various attempts have been made to extend standard random effects models to the analysis of spatial observations. This extension is a source of theoretical difŽculty due to the multidirectional dependence among nearest observations; much of the previous work was based on parametric assumptions about the random effects distribution. To avoid any restriction, we propose a conditional model for spatial binary responses, without assuming a parametric distribution for the random effects. The model parameters are estimated using the EM algorithm for nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation of a mixing distribution. To illustrate the proposed approach, the model is applied to a remote sensed image of the Nebrodi Mountains (Italy).

Developments in the Analysis of Spatial Data

Issues of spatial dependence have arisen in several areas of research, such as the environmental sciences, economics and sociology, but may be more generally relevant in circumstances in which cross-sectional or panel data are collected. Book-length descriptions statistical methods of analyzing spatial data include Cliff and Ord (1981), Anselin (1988), Haining (1990), Cressie (1993), Guyon (199...

Fishermen’s perspectives on climate variability

Understanding fishermen’s perspectives and responses relating to climate variability is important for sustainable fisheries management. To this end, a survey of captains of commercial passenger fishing vessels (CPFVs) was conducted in San Diego. The survey demonstrates that fishermen have observed and adapted to changes in the environment and fish populations associated with climate variability...

E$cient estimation of binary choice models under symmetry

This paper proposes a semiparametric maximum likelihood estimator for both the intercept and slope parameters in a binary choice model under symmetry and index restrictions. The estimator attains the semiparametric e$ciency bound in Cosslett (1987) under the symmetry and independence restrictions. Compared with the estimator of Klein and Spady (1993), which attains the semiparametric e$ciency b...

Inference in Semiparametric Dynamic Models for Binary Longitudinal Data

This article deals with the analysis of a hierarchical semiparametric model for dynamic binary longitudinal responses. The main complicating components of the model are an unknown covariate function and serial correlation in the errors. Existing estimation methods for models with these features are of O(N3), where N is the total number of observations in the sample. Therefore, nonparametric est...

www.econstor.eu Spatial Smoothing Techniques for the Assessment of Habitat Suitability

Precise knowledge about factors influencing the habitat suitability of a certain species forms the basis for the implementation of effective programs to conserve biological diversity. Such knowledge is frequently gathered from studies relating abundance data to a set of influential variables in a regression setup. In particular, generalised linear models are used to analyse binary presence/abse...
